Types of linoleum pollution

Methods for removing stains from linoleum depend on the nature of the origin of pollution and the limitation of their appearance. To choose the right detergent, you need to know exactly why there were yellow or dark stains.

There are several types of pollution of synthetic flooring:

  • fat accumulation;
  • ingrained traces of food products - ketchup, mayonnaise, beets;
  • spots of iodine and brilliant green;
  • ink, markers, felt-tip pens;
  • prints from the legs of a table or chair, bicycle tires;
  • congealed wax or paraffin;
  • hardened chewing gum;
  • construction paint;
  • red and pink marks of unknown origin.

If dirty foci appear on their own, then before cleaning it is necessary to find out the cause of their occurrence.

Cleaning recommendations

There are several secrets that you need to know before starting to clean linoleum from fresh and old pollution.

  • Whatever the nature of the origin of the stain, the area of contamination is primarily treated with a soap solution. Perhaps this will be quite enough to remove the stain and do not have to look for other ways.
  • PVC coating is afraid of high temperatures and frost. Therefore, you should not wash linoleum with too hot water and lay it on the balcony.
  • Aggressive chemicals, such as alcohol, turpentine, gasoline, are diluted with water in a 1: 1 ratio before use.
  • If a solvent must be used to remove the stain, then it is applied to a piece of cloth, which covers the area of contamination. Pouring such liquids on linoleum is not worth it.
  • Hard brushes and iron sponges should not be used for cleaning. It is better to do with soft materials that are unable to scrape the surface.
  • At the end of the work, the floor covering is washed with soapy water and wiped dry.

It is never known how a particular flooring will respond to a cleaning agent. In order for the work to succeed and no new stains appear on linoleum, you need to try the selected tool on a small piece in an inconspicuous place, for example, under a sofa or bed.

Methods for removing stains from linoleum

In cleaning linoleum, speed is the key to success. Contamination that has just appeared is always easier to wash than an old stain that has been ingrained in the structure of the material.

Woman washes linoleum

Fat or oil

Vegetable oil, grease, or mayonnaise on the floor must be carefully collected with a paper towel and the contaminated part of the linoleum should be washed with warm water and any detergent: liquid soap, gel, powder. If the fat has dried for a long time, turpentine will help get rid of pollution - you need to moisten a cotton pad in it and rub the stain, and then wash the floor with soapy water.

Iodine use

Iodine, juice, wine

Bright spots from iodine, juice, beets, red wine, food colors can be removed using bleach. To do this, according to the instructions, dilute the chlorine powder and treat the problem area.Within 5-7 minutes, bleach will react with the pigment, and the stain will gradually disappear.

Instead of pure bleach, you can use ready-made products containing chlorine, such as Domestos or White.

Important! After bleaching, whitish traces may remain on dark linoleum.

A more gentle method of removing stains from juice and iodine involves the use of soda or starch. A thick layer of powder is poured onto the area of contamination and covered with a wet rag. With the same napkin, after 10 minutes, the remaining traces are removed.

Trace from the felt-tip pen on linoleum

Felt-tip pen and ink

To clean the floor covering from traces of a ballpoint pen, colored pencils, felt-tip pens or marker will help chemicals containing alcohol. In this case, nail polish remover, white spirit, and vodka will come in handy. It is necessary to moisten the cotton pad in an alcohol solution and rub the stains until they disappear completely.

An old stain, ingrained in the deep layers of the material, can be removed with fine sandpaper or melamine sponge. After treating linoleum with an abrasive, the floor surface is smeared with linseed oil and polished with a clean cotton cloth.

Removing wax from linoleum

Wax, paraffin wax

Drops of solidified wax or paraffin can be removed by heating with an iron. The cleaning work is carried out as follows:

  1. a clean sheet of paper or a flap of white cotton cloth is applied to the contaminated area;
  2. the iron is heated to an average temperature (at which synthetics are ironed);
  3. gently iron the paper from the outside of the sheet, trying to ensure that all the molten wax passes to the cushioning material;
  4. wash the floor with detergent.

As an absorbent material, you cannot use a newspaper or other paper with typographic text, since the ink can go to linoleum.

If after cleaning by heating, yellow stains still remain, it is necessary to treat the floor with a solution of isopropyl alcohol or oxalic acid, mixing 1 tbsp. l chemical with 200 ml of water.

Rust stain on linoleum

Rust

Metal objects, standing in one place for a long time, leave orange traces of rust on linoleum, which is eaten into the surface of the coating and rubbed off with great difficulty. The following techniques will help to eliminate such pollution:

  • Squeeze the juice from half a lemon, moisten a piece of soft cloth with it and spread it on a dirty area, leaving it to dry completely.
  • Dissolve 1 tsp in a glass of warm water. salt and the same amount of citric acid. Dip a cotton swab in the cleaning solution and treat the stain.
  • A flap of cotton cloth soaked in kerosene is placed on a contaminated surface and left for half an hour. The remaining traces are washed off with a soapy solution.
  • With a solution of acetic acid (9%), a dirty place is treated, then wiped with ammonia.

Pink and red spots from rust can sometimes be managed with drying oil. The substance is applied to the fabric and unsightly stains are erased with polishing movements.

Dog and cat are guilty

Urine Pets

Eliminate yellow spots from cat and dog urine using acetic acid, lemon juice or alcohol. Having chosen one of the listed substances, it is half diluted with water and the place of contamination is treated.

From the old fixed spots, a solution prepared from 25 drops of iodine and 1 liter of water will help. The main thing is not to use this tool on a light coating.

Of industrial household products, UrineOff is the most effective.

How to wash green stuff

Stains from brilliant green are very difficult to remove. Especially if it was shed a few days ago and particles of the substance penetrated into the pores of the floor covering. However, there are several ways that can cope with such serious pollution and restore linoleum to its original form.

  • To clean the floor from diamond greens, you need to prepare soda and table vinegar. A green spot is abundantly sprinkled with powder, after which they begin to pour with vinegar. The acid reacts with alkali, as indicated by hissing and foam formation. As a result, the stain will discolor.However, it has been experimentally established that this method does not work on all types of linoleum.
  • Gauze is moistened in acetone, gasoline or kerosene and applied to the stain for half an hour.
  • Aged stains from brilliant green can be completely removed with the help of potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. To do this, dissolve 5 g of potassium permanganate in 50 ml of 9% vinegar and treat the stain with the resulting composition until the green color turns to tan. Then mix 1 tbsp. l vinegar and the same amount of hydrogen peroxide, apply to the stain and rub.

If it was not possible to achieve the desired purity the first time, processing can be repeated.

Child with chewing gum

How to remove chewing gum and scotch tape

A chewing gum that sticks to the floor dead or an old adhesive tape forgotten after repair can spoil the appearance of a room with the most beautiful design and expensive flooring. Cleaning up such contaminants is not very simple, but possible.

Sticky stains from tape can be removed with vegetable oil or glass care fluid. It is enough to apply these funds to the area of contamination and wipe with a sponge.

Traces of chewing gum are removed by freezing:

  • ice cubes are poured into a plastic bag and laid on a stain;
  • wait 15 minutes until the gum freezes;
  • with a blunt knife, the viscous substance is scraped off;
  • washed linoleum with soapy water.

If you do not want to bother with freezing, you can buy Mellerud, a wonderful German product designed to clean linoleum from stubborn dirt.

Can of black paint

How to get rid of building paint

A can of oil paint spilled on the floor can cause a lot of trouble. It’s good if this happened recently and the spot did not have time to freeze. Fresh paint should immediately be collected with a rag or paper, trying to leave as little substance as possible on the floor, after which you can begin to eliminate stains:

  1. The place of contamination is moistened with vegetable oil.
  2. After a few minutes, the remaining oil is collected with a paper towel.
  3. If the floor is not clean enough, traces of paint are removed with white spirit.

The dried spots are first scraped off with a knife, then treated with solvent-containing agents.

There are hundreds of ways to clean linoleum from stains and dirt. However, in some cases it is simply impossible to cope with pollution, and drastic measures have to be taken - cut a dirty piece of linoleum and replace it with a new one.
