How to get rid of the smell of baby, cat or dog urine on the carpet

A family with young children or older, sick people may run into the smell of urine on the carpet. But human urine does not have such a pungent "aroma" as, for example, cat or dog. This can be a real disaster, especially while a small pet is taught to the tray. Each time after the “accident”, it is very expensive to take the carpet to dry cleaning. And the floors at this time will remain uncoated. But there are ways to remove the smell of dog urine from the carpet yourself.

Know the enemy in person

The urine of the animal is a fairly aggressive liquid, it just can not cope. For the fight to be effective, you need to understand what we are dealing with if this liquid gets on the fleecy surface of the carpet. Knowing what, in fact, makes urine yellow and so “fragrant”, one can more clearly imagine by what means the problem can be solved.

  • Unichrome. A substance that leaves those same yellowish stains on carpets. It cannot be removed with plain water. Have to try, choosing the right tool.
  • Uric acid. An even more serious contender for cleanliness. It is she who is responsible for the pungent fetid smell. On the carpet, it looks like small transparent crystals. But these crystals are able to enhance the strength of the urinary odor with subsequent wetting. In addition, they are very stubborn: they are not afraid of either water or even ethyl alcohol. But you can defeat them with glycerol, alkalis or acids. Especially if these substances are heated.
  • Urea. Also urinary "flavoring". But it is quite simple to withdraw: even simple water will help.

Accordingly, the main efforts should be directed towards getting rid of uric acid.

Do not try to get rid of the smell by airing or masking with air fresheners. Of course, if guests unexpectedly arrived, such methods can temporarily save the situation, but the flavor molecules are gradually mixed in the air with urine molecules, as a result it only gets worse. Therefore, it is possible to completely remove the persistent "amber" only by getting rid of its source - spots on the carpet.

Alternative methods against the smell of urine

The surest way to defeat this smell at home is to start the fight immediately, before it has time to penetrate deep into the fibers of the carpet, soak in and gain a foothold there. Indeed, the long-standing “aroma” is always harsher, concentrated, literally beating in the nose. Yes, and to deal with it is much more difficult. The first thing to do is to adsorb the liquid component of urine as much as possible. To do this, the stain is blotted with a dry rag or paper towel until the moisture is absorbed as much as possible. Then, for half an hour, cover the stain with a napkin, on top of which a layer of crushed activated carbon is scattered. It will help to finish the "puddle." Now you can get down to the main fight.

  • Laundry soap.

As already mentioned, urea is afraid of glycerin. And it is contained in ordinary household soap. Using a sponge or brush, you need to lather the stained area, making sure that the pile is processed all the way to the bottom. After about half an hour, the soap is thoroughly washed off, moving from the edges of the stain to the center, so as not to stretch it even more.

  • Salt.

The spot is covered with several layers of ordinary table salt, left for several hours, after which it is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and the residues are thoroughly washed.

  • Manganese.

You can try to process a dark colored carpet with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and then wash it off with soapy water.

  • Iodine.

About 20 drops of iodine (or a little more) per liter of water is a sufficient concentration. The solution is also suitable only for dark rugs. The algorithm of actions is the same.

  • Acids

If the carpet is not light, you can treat the stain with fresh lemon juice and leave to dry. Or moisten a place that smells of urine, fill it with citric acid in powder (if the pile is light) and dry it too. Flushing these funds is not necessary.

But the mixture based on hydrogen peroxide must be washed off. To prepare it, take 10 ml of peroxide and add liquid soap (2 teaspoons is enough). The resulting composition is applied to the “labeled” area, left until dry, and then as carefully as possible wash the remaining solution from the carpet.

  • Soda.

It can be used both in dry form (similar to salt), and in the form of a paste. The first option involves two hours of exposure and further cleaning with a vacuum cleaner. To obtain a liquid product, it is necessary to mix soda with peroxide until gruel is formed and treat the stain with it.

  • Acetic solution.

For five parts of water we take one part of vinegar. In the resulting composition, we moisten a multilayer gauze napkin, cover it with a stain and press it well. After three minutes, we update the liquid and repeat the manipulation. So we repeat a few more times until the smell of children's urine is completely eliminated.

Given the fact that it is not always possible to establish that on the carpet there are consequences of a child’s surprise or water, and you don’t want to spoil the coating with chemicals, you can first verify the need for cleaning. To do this, prepare a very weak solution of potassium permanganate, literally a couple of crystals in half a glass of water and drip onto the stain. If there is no obvious smell of urine, you can simply dry the moisture.

Dog carpet urine cleaning

The multi-stage method is more radical, it is used if the previous compounds did not help eliminate the fetid odor.

  1. Water is diluted with vinegar in a ratio of 3: 1.
  2. Process the pollution from the spray gun.
  3. They wait until the stain dries, but remains a little damp.
  4. Generously sprinkle dry soda on the surface (if the pile is too wet, the soda will immediately begin to quench, reacting with vinegar, which will reduce all previous efforts to nothing, you will have to repeat everything again).
  5. A solution of peroxide and dishwashing liquid is sprayed on top (dishwasher products will not work).
  6. A chemical reaction will begin, during which the urine will gradually evaporate.
  7. After complete drying, it will remain to clean the carpet with a vacuum cleaner.

Another serious option is cleaning with chlorine-based products. It has two indisputable advantages: it allows you to effectively remove the smell and scares away the animal from a favorite place (a cat or dog will not mark a place treated with bleach). But this method has huge disadvantages:

  • during cleaning there is a strong odor that disappears for a long time;
  • chlorine often causes allergies, especially in children and people with asthma;
  • the risk is very high that the product will “eat out” the color or disrupt the structure of the fibers.

After the carpet has been cleaned with a chlorine-containing compound, the room will have to be ventilated for a long time, and the carpet itself must be thoroughly washed with soap and water (it is best to use ordinary laundry soap for this purpose).

What is important to remember

Carrying out such work, it is necessary to consider the following nuances:

  • It is better to isolate the animal during the cleaning process from the room where the dirty carpet is located, so that it does not accidentally breathe or is full of cleaning products.
  • If the house has a small child, they also block access to the place of work - for the same reasons. True, it is quite difficult to do this, because a little fidget must certainly get to where it is forbidden. In this case, it is better to clean the carpet after laying the baby on a night's sleep, so that everything can dry before morning.
  • After removing the smell, it is important to thoroughly ventilate the room, and dry the carpet thoroughly, otherwise, instead of the smell of dog urine, there will be a smell of dampness and mold.
  • If any of the ingredients of the cleaning compounds causes an allergic reaction in the home, you should look for another recipe.

If the "marks" are set by a kitten or puppy, then until he gets used to using the tray or waiting for a walk to meet his needs, the baby will write on the carpet again and again. Therefore, the smell should also be removed systematically. It is much easier to completely remove the carpet from this room for the period of accustoming the fluffy baby to toilet procedures.

Chemicals for removing the smell of animal urine

Odor Chemicals

If all the above recipes did not give the desired effect (or there is no desire, time to fiddle for a long time), you can use one of the industrial chemical compounds designed specifically to combat animal odors on carpets. They are available in a wide range, you can choose the option for any coating, for any degree of contamination. Such preparations cope with odor quickly and efficiently, saving the energy, time and nerves of pet owners. Their specially developed formulas do not mask, do not muffle the smell, but break down uric acid into simpler substances, removing them without a trace.

The only drawback is that industrial facilities will cost more than homeworkers. You can buy such enzymatic preparations in specialized stores of goods for animals, pet stores, veterinary clinics.

When choosing a specific product to combat the smell of animal urine, it is important to consider two important points: the type of carpet (fiber composition, length, color) and the exact compliance with the instructions for using the chemical product.

The most famous universal remedy is Vanish. It is whipped into a foam, applied to a stain. Abundantly sprinkle soda on top and allow to dry, after which they clean the carpet with a vacuum cleaner.

Of the animals specially designed to combat the smell, you can name the following:

  • Udalix ultra. This stain remover is also whipped into a foam and allowed to dry. The tool perfectly fights the pungent odor of uric acid on the carpet.
  • Ecolife. Concentrated powder, specially designed to combat the smell of dog or cat urine, as well as their marks left on the carpet. The product is diluted with water and left to act for a while.
  • Odor Eliminator, Natures Miracle, Odorgone. These are sprays that are sufficient to apply to the stained area by spraying. They are good in that they do not contain any harmful or dangerous components for humans or animals, but they can qualitatively remove the smell of dog or cat urine from the carpet.

To get rid of the smell if a dog or cat wrote on the carpet, you can use other similar means:

  • Odor Kill & Stain Remover;
  • Urine Off
  • Pet Stain & Odor Remover;
  • Just for cats Stain & Odor Remover.

Of the Russian goods of this group, they are distinguished by high quality:

  • "Zoosan";
  • "DesoSan";
  • Bio-g.

For carpets made from natural fibers, you can also choose suitable compositions with varying degrees of aggressiveness. For example, imported Cleansan or domestic "Zoovorsin".

Before you remove the smell from the carpet with the help of specialized compounds offered in pet stores, you need to check whether the animal perceives it normally. Often after such treatment, even the most peaceful and calm cat begins to behave inappropriately.

In order for none of these tools to bring unpleasant surprises, it is important to choose them correctly for each specific situation, as well as strictly observe the recommended dosages, methods of application, and safety measures.

Carpet cleaning

Do not harm the carpet

In fact, removing the fetid smell of urine from the carpet without damaging the product itself is not an easy task. This is especially true of the use of folk methods.

It is possible that the recipe will help to remove the smell without a trace, but at the same time make the carpet faded, damage the pile, dye it or, conversely, bleach the dye. Sometimes, using the "weapon of popular anger" inadvertently, you can literally burn the place of processing. To avoid this, prudently observe the following simple rules:

  • Hot water uses detergents more efficiently than cold water. But you should not use hot water when cleaning carpets: you can ruin the structure of the pile.
  • The sooner you start the fight with a spot of urine, the easier it will be to cope with this smell. And vice versa: the longer the urine came into contact with the pile of the carpet, the deeper and more firmly it got into it.
  • Do not brush while brushing against the direction of the carpet pile. Otherwise, then he may break in the wrong position. It will look like a lasa or bald patch. Moreover, with a constant unnatural inclination, the pile experiences heavy loads - and the carpet in this place wears out faster.
  • To remove stains and the smell of urine from the carpets, you can not use solutions that include sauerkraut, its brine or tea. Traces of them are then almost impossible to reduce.
  • Detergents or dishwashing detergents may contain components that are aggressive on carpets and, as a result, affect the color or quality of the pile. Therefore, before using them, it is recommended to test them in a small inconspicuous area.
  • The same applies to folk recipes: vinegar, peroxide, citric acid, chlorine are far from safe for every carpet. Therefore, the rule here is the same: a preliminary test in an inconspicuous place.

So, in the fight against the smell of dog or cat urine on the carpet at home, there are many difficulties: it is important not to harm the household (especially small children) and the hairy pets themselves, not to spoil the described carpet even more ... But if it is not possible to send the carpet to a professional dry cleaner, the purity and freshness of the latter will definitely be worth all the effort.
