Sprouting onions on the windowsill

How to plant onions?

The easiest way to grow green onions is to take away a sprouted turnip and stick it in a container with a small amount of water. Our mothers and grandmothers did this to provide the family with fresh herbs in the winter. The well-trodden path is good for those who are reluctant to bother with getting lush, thick feathers.

If your goal is to harvest a good stable crop, we recommend that you listen to the following tips:

  1. Choose a good planting material. There are different varieties of onions: bulb (turnip), batun, leek, chives, shallots, slimes and others. But on the windowsill, many prefer to grow just turnips. To get greens, it is better to select small old bulbs that have already been saturated with moisture. Size does not matter, but it’s more profitable to sprout a small onion, because it is more compact, and it gives the same amount of feathers.
  2. Cut off the tops. The greens will grow denser and appear earlier if you cut off the top of the bulb by about 1/4 (side opposite to the base with roots). No need to be afraid to damage the bow. Some housewives cut not only the top, but also the sides of large turnips. They let the scraps fry in the soup. If the roots and the core are not damaged, the onion will grow even in this form.
  3. Find a wide pot - pan. There is not much space on the windowsill, so to get a good harvest you need to place the onion compactly. A square wide pot, including a homemade one, is ideal for this. For example, from egg packaging or food container.
  4. Water the bulbs regularly. The growth rate of greenery and its juiciness directly depend on the amount of moisture. Onions are very fond of watering and can grow in water alone without land.
  5. Do not cut the greens, but pick them off at the base. If grown onions properly, it can supply feathers for 2-3 months, releasing more and more, until the internal forces are exhausted. But when cutting greenery with a knife or scissors, the plant spends energy to recover and slows growth for a while. Breaking off the pen at the base for it is less traumatic.
  6. Plant onions in 3-4 sets. The recommended interval between landings is 10 days. This technique allows you to collect fresh herbs continuously. While one party will grow feathers, another will already reach maturity.

The onion gives the first crop in 2–2.5 weeks. At this point, the feathers grow by 20 cm. After that, they can be regularly cut and eaten separately fresh or as part of dishes.

Growing bulbs in a glass

Container for growing

You can grow onions on the windowsill in a variety of dishes. There are even special bulbs that can be purchased in the same department as flower pots. The device has a hole for each bulb, which allows you to securely fix them. The similarity of such a device can be made from a low plastic container by making holes in its lid the size of a medium-sized chicken egg (with scissors or a heated knitting needle).

Also for growing onions you can use:

  • glass jars from under baby food (filled with water, and the onion sits on the neck, hanging the roots);
  • plastic packaging from eggs;
  • plastic bottles (cut along or across);
  • food containers;
  • flower pots.

And you can turn the bow on the windowsill into an original decoration resembling pineapple. To do this, cut off the neck in a plastic bottle and make 15-25 holes for the bulbs around the perimeter. Next, stick them with the roots inward and fill the bottle with damp earth. When the greens are dancing, the landing will look like this:

Substrate

Although onions grow well in ordinary water, many people prefer to plant it in the ground. Firstly, it nourishes the plant better, and secondly, it reduces the likelihood of decay. Garden soil is suitable as a substrate. You can dig it just outside, and at home wrap it in dense matter and calcine it in the oven.

Varietal onions are more whimsical to the ground. He needs necessarily loose soil, fertilized with humus and manure, with a neutral pH. Also, when grown in the ground, onions need a drainage system.

If you sometimes forget to water your plants, hydrogel balls will come to the rescue. They absorb and retain moisture for a long time. With them, moisture-loving onions will always feel good.

Germination of different types of onions

Choice of Onions on Greens

You can grow on the windowsill not only onions, but also other varieties. At home, shallots, chives, slime, batun, and many-tier grow perfectly. Each variety has its own characteristics.

  • Shallot gives about 2 times more greens and ripens 5 days earlier than onions. However, planting it before the beginning of February does not make sense. In winter, the plant is in hibernation. It is also important to consider that shallot feathers must be cut no later than the 26–35th day, otherwise they will disappear. The cut is performed across the bulb closer to the bottom. Residues with roots suitable for re-planting.
  • Chives - many years. To grow it on a windowsill, you will need to get a 3-4-year-old plant, cut leaves from it around October-November, and transplant it with a lump of earth into pots. The feathers of this onion ripen 2 times faster and after cutting they fully grow back in 10 days. On the palate, they are sweetish and practically not sharp.
  • Onion To get greenery at home, they dig out plants from the garden for 2-3 years of life. Bushes with a lump of land are transplanted into pots with the onset of the first frost. This variety is famous for its high content of vitamin C (more than 2 times that of onions). The greenery is cut once every 30–35 days, otherwise after this time it begins to become coarse.
  • Tiered Bow distinguished by tender greens. It is possible to harvest more from it than from onions. Greens are ready for cutting on the 25th day. Landing can be carried out at any time of the year. The plant has no pronounced dormant period.
  • Slime Onion can be grown on the windowsill for greens for 2-3 years. It is dug up in October, separated and placed in pots for indoor plants. Feathers are cut off when they reach a height of 20–25 cm. Throughout the time, they remain tender and juicy.

Onion sprouting

Germination

To obtain a pen, it is ideal to select bulbs with greening tops. If only dry onion is available, it is recommended to sprout it.

  1. Prepare a container with a depth of 7 cm.
  2. Fill the pot 3-4 cm with disinfected soil.
  3. Fill the soil with water so that it covers the surface by 1 cm.
  4. Place the onions in a container and deepen slightly.
  5. Put the onions in a warm place (25 degrees) and wait 7 days.
