Wash nuts only cleaners or is it really necessary?

Washing fruits and vegetables is a common procedure, the need for which is beyond doubt. But only a few think about whether to wash the purchased nuts before eating. But before you get into your hands, they have come a long way and need to be thoroughly cleaned.

Different types of nuts

Do I need to wash nuts before eating?

Nuts grown on a tree fall to the ground, then go through the process of collection, transportation and storage in a warehouse. After they hit the shelves, they are often sold outdoors. Suppliers rarely care about product cleanliness. Add to this the adverse environmental conditions and the unwashed hands of the workers, and the question of the need to wash nuts will disappear by itself.

Freshly Picked Walnuts

How to wash nuts in the shell?

Inshell whole nuts - for example, walnuts - need to be treated with boiling water to get rid of germs:

  1. put the unpeeled nuts in a bowl or bowl;
  2. pour boiling water so that water covers the entire contents;
  3. leave for about half an hour, then carefully remove the nuts with a slotted spoon and rinse under a stream of warm running water.

Such processing will make it easy to open the shell, which will become softer under the influence of hot water.

Do not make one of the common mistakes: do not drain the water until you have removed the nuts from it, otherwise all the dirt that has settled to the bottom will again be on the surface of the shell.

As for other types of nuts, then the rules are as follows:

  • Peanuts grow in the ground, so it must be scalded with boiling water before eating.
  • Hazelnuts can also be poured with boiling water, and after 5 minutes, carefully remove from the water.
  • Rinse the coconuts with running water and remove the fibers near the puncture site before cutting. In this case, dirt and germs will not get inside.
  • Macadamia nut is known for its extremely hard shell. This species goes on sale with a cut, so before cleaning it should be doused with boiling water to get rid of dirt and bacteria.
  • Pine nuts can be washed with running water and then roasted in the oven.

Water-soaked Almonds

How to wash peeled nuts?

Small peeled nuts (cashews, walnuts, peanuts and others) that you buy by weight in the market or in the supermarket must be subjected to a washing procedure. This applies not only to products sold in the open air, but also to sealed snacks. At the factory, their contents are not washed, and if this happens (from large responsible suppliers), they will probably write about this on the packaging, and the price of such a product will be much higher.

Some types of nuts are treated with chemicals, so washing before eating will allow you to protect your health and get rid of the unnatural aftertaste.

The peeled nuts are best rinsed with a stream of warm running water. The same goes for dried fruits.

Drying walnut kernels

How to dry nuts?

After washing, the kernels must be dried as soon as possible so that the moisture does not spoil their taste. To do this, you can use any means available at your home:

  • oven,
  • microwave
  • a pan (it is more difficult to achieve uniform drying on it).

Some use a regular hair dryer for this purpose: nuts in a colander are "blown" by a stream of warm air.

For drying in the oven, lay the nuts in one layer and leave them for 8-10 minutes at a temperature of 150 degrees.

Roasted peanuts

Do I need to wash nuts before frying?

Many people like to feast on fried nuts. Heat treatment makes them more crispy and tasty.But in the process of frying, nuts lose not only moisture, but also some useful substances, so you should adhere to the rule: the lower the processing temperature, the more useful the product.

Peanuts, cashews, almonds and pine nuts can be fried in order to protect themselves from harmful microorganisms. It’s best to use an oven, not a pan.

Do not set the temperature regulator to a mark above 150 degrees: at higher rates, peanut butter reaches a smoke point and becomes harmful.

Heat treatment kills pathogenic bacteria, but after buying nuts at an open-air point, for your own peace of mind, it is better to rinse them with running water first.

If you didn’t even think about washing nuts, try this for the first time, and very soon the right treatment will become a habit. This will avoid unpleasant diseases and preserve the health of loved ones.
