Can I wash the protective cover from the mattress in the washing machine?

A mattress cover is a practical thing that protects a bulk product from getting wet and various contaminants. It is difficult to disagree that it is much easier to wash a removable mattress cover than to clean a heavy double mattress. In addition, many manufacturers producing such products do not prohibit machine and hand washing. For example, you can wash the cover from the Ascona mattress in the washing machine or manually. The main thing is to know the type of material from which the product is made, and adhere to the recommendations of specialists.

General rules

The protective cover for the mattress is usually made of natural or semi-synthetic material, which is easy to wash, does not sit and does not fade, has strength and wear resistance. Such products are washed at least twice a year.

In order to adequately cope with the work, first of all, it is necessary to carefully study the care information left by the manufacturer on the label, and the composition of the material. Only after this can you start washing.

If the instruction is lost, and the label has been wiped off for a long time, you should try to determine the composition of the fabric by touch and, depending on this, focus on the general conditions for cleaning. In addition, the rules for caring for mattress covers purchased at Ikea and other major markets can be found on the Internet without any problems.

  • Cotton. It is washed in the machine or manually at a water temperature of not more than + 60 ° C. A natural cotton fabric can withstand + 95 ° C, but with this treatment the pattern may become discolored, and the product may be reduced by a few centimeters in size.
  • Polycotton. A mixture of cotton and polyester. It is machine washable and can withstand cleaning at temperatures above + 60 ° C.
  • Microfiber. The artificial material can withstand machine wash at a water temperature of not more than + 60 ° C.
  • Bamboo. Natural material from natural raw materials is washed delicately without spinning. Water temperature - no more than + 40 ° С.

For washing, it is better to choose a liquid detergent: gel or capsules. Conventional laundry detergent is poorly washed when rinsing, so whitish stains may appear on the dried product. Stain removers and bleaches are not recommended.

Dry the case outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. It is important to protect its surface from direct sunlight. So that the product does not deform, it is laid out in a flattened form on a horizontal surface.

Wash waterproof cover

A waterproof cover protects the mattress not only from dust, dirt, scuffs, but also from moisture penetration of various origins. Undoubtedly, such a thing is very useful when you need to lay a children's mattress or a patient’s bed. And in everyday life, troubles often occur with juice or coffee spilled on the bed, stains from which are incredibly difficult to remove from the surface of the mattress.

Waterproof mattress pad

The waterproof mattress cover is made of synthetic material, on which a membrane coating is applied from the wrong side. Moreover, the side parts of the product can be sewn from another fabric, for example from fine knitwear or cotton.

Membrane tissue needs special care. The fact is that on the surface of the protective film there are numerous air tubules, thanks to which the fabric “breathes”. Dirt clogs these artificial pores, as a result of which the product loses its basic qualities: water resistance and air permeability.

The waterproof fabric cover can be washed in the machine and manually. In doing so, the following rules should be observed:

  • The washing is carried out in a delicate mode, the water temperature should not be higher than + 40 ° С.At high temperatures, the membrane layer may break, so do not use very hot water when washing.
  • As a detergent, special compositions intended for cleaning membrane tissue should be used.
  • Spin the machine off. Squeezing a waterproof cover is not recommended at all. After the product has been removed from the drum of the machine, it is left for some time on the grate above the bathtub, allowing water to drain. Twisting can damage the membrane tissue.
  • The cover can be dried in a machine by setting the drying temperature + 30 ° C, and also spread out on a horizontal surface away from heating appliances.
  • It is possible to iron a cover with a moisture-proof coating, but only through a thick cotton towel and a not too hot iron.

To completely restore the moisture-protective properties of the product after washing, the surface is treated with special impregnation for membrane tissue.

A removable cover will protect the mattress from dirt, stains, getting wet and other troubles. A quality product can withstand up to one hundred washes, and if it becomes unusable, it is easy to replace. After all, the cost of a cover is ten times lower than the cost of a mattress.
