How to store semolina so that it does not deteriorate and does not become the prey of bugs?

Semolina porridge is a dish from childhood. Our memory keeps memories of the sweet yellow porridge that we ate with a small spoon from my mother’s hands.

But much more can be made from semolina: desserts, for example, puddings, all kinds of casseroles. For the preparation of all these dishes, the quality of semolina should be simply the highest. It is not difficult to determine this, the main thing is that the packaging is transparent. And then you certainly cannot overlook the presence of lumps or bugs that inevitably arise if the semolina is stored incorrectly.

But if storage in warehouses meets all the requirements, then at home it should also be appropriate. Which one? Let's try to figure it out.

Temperature conditions and storage periods

To maintain semolina in perfect condition, the air temperature in the apartment should not exceed 23 degrees.

Tip

Pay special attention to humidity, its rate can be as little as 70%. And not at all higher.

If these conditions are met, cereals can be stored for 7–9 months.

When buying semolina in the store, check the shelf life indicated on the package - this is the deadline, which is calculated depending on the date of manufacture. During this time, cereals can be used as food. But if storage conditions are not met, it will become unsuitable for cooking much earlier.

In addition to the temperature and storage periods, there is another important point - the capacity in which the semolina is poured.

Selection of capacity for semolina

Having brought the cereal home from the supermarket in standard packaging (paper or plastic bag), do not forget to pour it immediately, that is, on the same day.

Semolina is best stored in airtight containers. It can be:

  • glass jars with a tight lid;
  • plastic containers, the lids of which also either tightly snap or twist;
  • clay or ceramic containers, only again hermetically sealed.

Experienced housewives have found another good solution - linen bags with ties. Before using them to store semolina, you need to boil in cool saline.

Requirements - Postscript

Whatever container you choose, you need to put it in a dark and dry place. From the sunlight, the croup will quickly deteriorate. And from increased humidity, pests will start in it or mold will grow.

No matter how well all of the above requirements are complied with, cereals need to be checked from time to time - what is it for smell and taste? If lumps begin to form, the semolina is enough to simply dry and then sift. But if it became bitter, it means that moths or bugs chose it as their delicacy. And bitterness is caused by the waste of their activities. Getting into baked goods or porridge, they simply ruin it. In no case should this be allowed.

There are proven methods:

  • bake in the oven immediately after purchase at the store;
  • put in the freezer for several days immediately after they brought the cereal home as a purchase - these first two methods will help in the destruction of the larvae;
  • keep in the refrigerator all the time if you have space;
  • put a bay leaf or foil sheet in a container.

Only adhering to the advice and requirements, you can keep semolina in good condition and prepare beautiful and tasty dishes from it.
